Does Prophet Muhammed forbid the writing of his hadith?

It has been documented in Muslim, Ahmed and other sources of Hadith that the prophet Muhammad has prohibited the writing of his hadith. The historical evidence supports this fact, since the words and actions (Hadith & Sunna) attributed to the Prophet did not appear until the second century after his death.

The Quran has prophesied the fabrication of Hadith and Sunna by the Prophet’s enemies:

“We have permitted the enemies of every prophet human and jinn devils to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.” 6:112

The Quran states that it is in accordance with God’s will that the fabrication of the Hadith was allowed to happen and that is to serve as criteria for exposing the true believers from the hypocrites. Those who are attracted to and uphold Hadith are proven to be false believers. This can easily be explained by the fact that true believers are satisfied with God alone. They are satisfied with God’s words alone and with God’s Law (Quran) alone. On the other hand, false believers are not satisfied with God alone, thus they seek other sources and other idols besides God:

“This is to let the minds of those who do not believe in the Hereafter listen to such fabrications, and accept them, and thus expose their real convictions.” 6:113

Immediately after these Quranic words God describes the Quran as “fully detailed” and as the only source of law:

“Shall I seek other than God as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed?” 6:114

The books of Hadith report the Prophet prohibiting the writing of his hadith and that his followers should not write anything from him other than the Quran!

Shown below are two such Hadith. They are taken from two of the sources of hadith which are regarded as authentic (sahih) by Hadith scholars, they are Sahih Muslim and Is-haah Ahmad Ibn Hanbal:

The Prophet said, “Do not write down anything from me except the Quran.” [Ahmed, Vol. 1, Page 171, and Sahih Moslim, Zuhd, Book 42, Number 7147]

This Hadith states that the Prophet maintained his anti-Hadith stand until death. [Ahmed Ibn Hambal, Vol. 1, Page 192]

(1) Ibn Saeed Al-Khudry reported that the messenger of God had said, “Do not write anything from me except Quran. Anyone who wrote anything other than the Quran shall erase it.”

Some Hadith scholars tried to imply that Muhammed changed his view about writing the hadiths. However, the following hadith, which was reported 30 years after the death of the Prophet, confirms that the Prophet Muhammed never authorized the writing of the hadiths since the time he told his followers not to write but the Quran..

(2) From Ibn Hanbal; Zayd Ibn Thabit (The Prophet’s closest revelation writer) visited the Khalifa Mu’aawiyah (more than 30 years after the Prophet’s death), and told him a story about the Prophet. Mu’aawiyah liked the story and ordered someone to write it down. But Zayd said. ” the messenger of God ordered us never to write anything of his hadith”.

(3) The famous book, “Ulum Al-Hadith” by Ibn Al-Salah, reports a hadith by Abu Hurayra in which Abu Hurayra said the messenger of God came out to us while we were writing his hadiths and said; “What are you writing?” We said, “Hadiths that we hear from you, messenger of God.” He said, “A book other than the book of God?” We said, “Should we talk about you?” He said, Talk about me, that would be fine, but those who will lie will go to Hell. Abu Hurayra said, we collected what we wrote of Hadiths and burned them in fire.

(4) In the famous book, “Taq-yeed Al-Ilm”, Abu Hurayra said, the messenger of God was informed that some people are writing his hadiths. He took to the pulpit of the mosque and said, “What are these books that I heard you wrote? I am just a human being. Anyone who has any of these writings should bring it here. Abu Hurayra said we collected all these and burned them in fire.

(5) Ibn Hanbal in his Musnad book, narrates a hadith in which Abdullah Ibn Omar said, “the messenger of God one day came out to us as if he was going to depart us soon and said, “When I depart you (die), hold to the book of God, prohibit what it prohibits and accept as halal what it makes halal.”

(6) Again, in the book “Taq-yeed Al-Ilm”, Abu Saeed Al-Khudry said, ” I asked the messenger of God a permission to write his hadiths, but he refused to give me a permission.”

(7) The farewell Pilgrimage of the Prophet Muhammed is a corner stone in the Muslim history. The Final Sermon given by the Prophet during this pilgrimage was witnessed by thousands of Muslims. There are however three versions of this sermon in the Hadiths books. This by itself reflects the degree of corruption of the Hadith books as this is the most witnessed speech of the prophet Muhammed.

1- First version, ” I left for you what if you hold on to, you will never be misguided, the book of God and my Family. Moslim 44/4, Nu2408; Ibn Hanbal 4/366; darimi 23/1, nu 3319. This is the version made up by the Shiite Muslims.

2-Second version, “I left for you what if you hold on to, you will never be misguided, the book of God and my Sunnah” . Muwatta, 46/3 This is the version made up by the Sunni Muslims.

3- Third version, “I left for you what if you hold on to, you will never be misguided, the book of God.” Moslim 15/19, nu 1218; Ibn Majah 25/84, Abu dawud 11/56. This last version is the version hated by the Sunni and Shiite Muslims alike. This is the only version which conforms with the repeated assertion in the Quran that Muhammed’s message was only the Quran. Many Sunni Muslims and Shiite Muslims do not even know that this version of the sermon exists. In reality, they do not want to know, the truth hurts.

How do you know how to do the daily prayers without following the sunna/hadith? What about the other practical aspects of Islam that are not detailed in the Holy Qur’an but are requirements of Muslims (details of things like slaughtering animals for food, performing the pilgrimage, rules of fasting, etc)? Surely a detailed explanation from the Prophet is necessary to perform these rituals in the proper manner, right?

All those things youssef were not invented by the prophet the quran says he followed a perfect example you see all the positions of prayer in the bible somebody taught me how to pray taught me all those things you mentioned you think at the time of the prophet that they had as many books as we do no besides if take out all the ayats in the quran where the word hadith and its variations and do not translate the word hadith what you get is a clear cut warning from Allah against hadith the truth about God is the most important truth in your life have you not read in the Quran about that common lot or do you even know what I’m talking about

Interesting info. I know all the hadiths are not authentic especially which don’t correspondence with The Quran but I believe there are FIVE Times Salah Please reflect as it mentioned in the Quran but I would like to know who made up the Rukats for Salats and where I can find infor:-
However God gave us the times for the Salat (contact Prayers) in the Quran :
    (1) The Dawn Prayer (Fajr in Arabic) given in 11:114, 24:58
    (2) The Noon Prayer (Zuher in Arabic) , given in 17:78 and 30:18
    (3) The Afternoon Prayer (Asr in Arabic), given in 2:238
    (4) The sunset Prayer (Maghrib in Arabic), given in 11:114
    (5) The Night Prayer (Isha in Arabic), given in 24:58

I have found out Salat eventhough Allah says YOU he taught prayer, but just like Allah taught the Quran to Prophet Mohammed pbuh through Messenger Angel Gabriel so Salat were taught by him and he gave instructions and showed him and times and Rukats were set for five time Salat per day. Please check on following Website and reflect …. http://harunyahya.com/en/Articles/4343/the-importance-of-salat-(prayer)

A complete Hippocratic.. First of all, he is ‘BELIEVING’ in the Hadith of writing the Quran down and nothing Else.. Second, he ‘IGNORES’ and blatantly misinterprets the Hadith.. A person who is not even aware of Hadith/Quranic Sciences is a ‘JAAHIL’ misleading others… We are Supposed to See how the Salaf Interpreted the HAdith as, and not just interpret it however we Want! If this Hadith is found in Sahih Muslim, then why don;t you show Imam Nawawi’s Sharh on this Hadith? His opinion is way better than yours, because he is a great Shaf’i and who are you? Just a normal person thinking the majority of people are ‘wrong’? Not only that, but just THINK for a moment.. there are some verses WITHIN the Quran that Ascribe or Limit Allah’s Place (Naodubillah) IF you interpret it Completely Literally.. same is with Ahadith.. if you ignore the 1400 years of Work on Tafsir/and Commentery on Ahadith, then you can easily become an anthropomorphist because you take verses which were Metaphorically understood by Great Imaams as ‘Literal’ which is completely Misguidance and is KUFR! The Last thing, How on EARTH can you tell US how to PRAY? I am sure Allah protects KNOWLEDGE and That Includes Ahadith! If you think You can tell us ‘HOW TO PRAY’ then keep this in mind, no one will be listening to you because you are out of SOURCES! Quran doesn’t specify Things, but it’s Orders are more Important! If you can tell us how to pray, then that is Like a person INVENTING/IMAGINING out of NOTHING.. or is ‘BLINDLY’ Following his Parents/Ancestors WHO LEARNED PRAYING FROM THE PEOPLE THAT WERE BELIEVING IN HADITH!

Very well put article but to the people still unconvinced and using the age old how do we pray rhetoric i would like to say this. I am not in favor of discarding ahadith completely as it does work as a historical piece of literature which can assist believers in understanding for personal practices and principal. But there is a dangerous dynamic now growing in the Muslim world one where hadith thumpers are implicating that we can use hadith as a source of law when in fact Allah swt said “Shall I seek other than God as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed?” 6:114

  8. almammy Yosef ib Rahman

Researching ahadith and they don’t explain how to make salaat,
Again they do not explain times like Qrn or Positions period

  9. bert

In accordance to 6:114 we must accept the Quran as the only source of law:

“Shall I seek other than God as a source of law, when He has brought down to you this book fully detailed?” 6:114

God asserts that the Quran is fully detailed and contains everything for our salvation:

“We did not leave anything out of the book” 6:38

“We have brought the book down to you to provide explanations for all things” 16:89

“……He has brought down to you this book fully detailed” 6:114

In spite of these clear Quranic words, it is sad that most Muslims still claim that the Quran does not include everything and that the Quran alone is insufficient. They are arrogantly arguing against God just as God describes them in the verse:

“We have cited in this Quran every example for the people, yet the human being is most argumentative.” 18:54

They will say that the Quran speaks of the headlines only and that the details are to be found only in the hadith!

Note the words “all things” in 16:89 means all matters, big and small alike. The words “fully detailed” in 6:114 simply means that the Quran contains all the details. It is necessary here to explain exactly what is meant by saying that the Quran contains all the details. The followers of hadith claim that the hadith contains many details that are not to be found in the Quran. This is quite true, however the absence of these details from the Quran is not because the Quran is not fully detailed, but because these details were never decreed by God. The Quran contains all the details that are sanctioned by God and for which we will be held accountable to. The followers of hadith have a wide collection of books which they highly cherish and which contain all sorts of ridiculous details to say the least. The following verse includes a mockery and a warning against such acts of idolatry:

“Or do you have some book in which you are studying? Do you have in it whatever you choose?” 68:37-38

Consequently, and in accordance with 6:114 and other similar verses, all guidance will be derived from the Quran and nothing else.
