What Is Salat ?
= prayer, supplication, petition, oration, eulogy, benediction, commendation, blessing, honour, magnifiy, bring forth, follow closely, walk/follow behind closely, to remain attached.
Salat, according to the Quran, has its purpose. It is not an objective in itself but merely a means towards achieving an objective. One of its aims is to be one of the means of being mindful of Allah (i.e. His Laws, Commands, Guidance, Instructions, Recommendations, Proscriptions, etc.).
Allah says in the Quran, Sura 20 verse 14:
“Innanee ana Allahu la ilaha illa ana fa o AAbudnee waaqimi a l ssalata lithikree”
“Surely I am Allah, there is no god but I, therefore serve Me and keep up prayer for My remembrance :”.
In Sura 62 verse 9, Allah says,
“Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo itha noodiya li l ssalati min yawmi aljumuAAati fa i sAAaw ila thikri Allahi watharoo albayAAa thalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taAAlamoon a”
“O you who believe! when the call is made for prayer on Friday , then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trading ; that is better for you, if you know.”
Masajid , according to the Quran, are places wherein Allah’s Attributes are
[2:138] - “Sibghata Allahi waman ahsanu mina Allahi sibghatan wanahnu lahu AAabidoon a”
commemorated ` Salla ‘ literally means “ Follow closely “. In the context here, it implies trying to adopt the ` Hue’ of Allah (2:138) absorbing Divine Attributes in one’s personality, of course, in the limited human capacity.
The above is broader definition of Salat, what it actually means , but now only the Rememberance part will be discussed ,which is called Prayer , in order to Remember and come into contact with Allah and to connect with Allah.
